Sabor a Mí

Born from a whiskey-kissed evening between Álvaro Carrillo and his fiancée, this became one of the most important boleros ever written — and the undying standard.

About the Song

"Sabor a Mí" is a 1959 bolero written by Mexican composer Álvaro Carrillo (1919–1969), born in Oaxaca. Carrillo wrote over 300 songs, but this became his masterpiece. The song was born during a romantic evening when Carrillo's fiancée, Ana María Incháustegui, complained that his whiskey-flavored kisses were making her taste liquor. Carrillo replied: "What you taste is not whiskey — it's the taste of me... sabor a mí." First recorded by Los Tres Ases and Rolando Laserie, it became the most successful song in Mexico in 1960. In 1964, Eydie Gormé recorded it with Trío Los Panchos, making it an international hit. Javier Solís' 1960 rendition was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. Luis Miguel covered it on his 1997 album "Romances," peaking at #6 on Billboard Hot Latin Songs. The song has been called the "Chicano National Anthem" due to its deep roots in Mexican-American communities, and Los Lobos recorded it on their 1978 debut album. An English version, "Be True to Me," was recorded by Doris Day in 1964. Carrillo and his wife died together in a car accident on April 3, 1969.

Meaning of the Song

"Sabor a Mí" is a meditation on love's permanence through traces left behind — not grand gestures, but the subtle imprint one person leaves on another. The narrator is humble ("I am nothing, I have no vanity") and poor, offering only the best of his life. The central metaphor — that a lover's essence lingers on the lips like a taste — transforms something physical into something eternal. "More than a thousand years will pass" but that flavor endures. It's love expressed not through possession but through indelible presence, the idea that two souls who've been close enough leave permanent marks on each other.

Lyrics / Letra

Tanto tiempo disfrutamos de este amor
Nuestras almas se acercaron tanto así
Que yo guardo tu sabor
Pero tu llevas también
Sabor a mí

Si negaras mi presencia en tu vivir
Bastaría con abrazarte y conversar
Tanta vida yo te di
Que por fuerza tienes ya
Sabor a mí

No pretendo ser tu dueño
No soy nada yo no tengo vanidad
De mi vida doy lo bueno
Soy tan pobre, que otra cosa puedo dar

Pasarán más de mil años, muchos más
Yo no sé si tenga amor la eternidad
Pero allá, tal como aquí
En la boca llevarás
Sabor a mí

No pretendo ser tu dueño
No soy nada yo no tengo vanidad
De mi vida doy lo bueno
Soy tan pobre, que otra cosa puedo dar

Pasarán más de mil años, muchos más
Yo no sé si tenga amor la eternidad
Pero allá, tal como aquí
En la boca llevarás
Sabor a mí

English Translation

We enjoyed this love for so long
Our souls drew so close together
That I keep your flavor
But you also carry
A taste of me

If you were to deny my presence in your life
It would be enough to embrace you and talk
I gave you so much life
That by now you surely have
A taste of me

I don't pretend to be your owner
I am nothing, I have no vanity
Of my life I give the best
I am so poor, what else can I give?

More than a thousand years will pass, many more
I don't know if eternity holds love
But there, just as here
On your lips you will carry
A taste of me

I don't pretend to be your owner
I am nothing, I have no vanity
Of my life I give the best
I am so poor, what else can I give?

More than a thousand years will pass, many more
I don't know if eternity holds love
But there, just as here
On your lips you will carry
A taste of me
