Querida is a contemporary mariachi interpretation of one of Juan Gabriel's most beloved ballads, composed in the late 1970s and recorded with mariachi arrangement in the 1980s. Juan Gabriel — El Divo de Juárez — revolutionized Mexican popular music by writing songs of emotional directness that the mariachi tradition could hold with particular authority. Mariachi Nuevo Real's version honors this tradition of El Divo's music living most fully in the ensemble that gave it its greatest power: full brass, strings, and the voice of longing that Juan Gabriel understood better than anyone.
