La Gata Bajo La Lluvia

Some songs rage against heartbreak. This one shrugs. Rafael Pérez Botija's iconic bolero turns cold indifference into the most devastating breakup ever written.

About the Song

"La Gata Bajo La Lluvia" ("The Cat Under the Rain") was written by Spanish composer Rafael Pérez Botija and originally performed by the Spanish-Mexican singer Rocío Dúrcal. It was released in 1981 as the second single from her album "Confidencias" (known as "La Gata" in Spain, Argentina, and Peru). The song became a massive commercial hit, selling a million copies in Mexico alone — making it one of the best-selling singles in the country's history. Dúrcal (1944–2006), born María de los Ángeles de las Heras Ortiz in Madrid, became Mexico's adopted queen of ranchera and balada after emigrating in the 1970s. The song was featured in the 1989 Spanish film "La Blanca Paloma" starring Antonio Banderas, and appeared in the Season 1 finale of Drag Race España (2021). It has inspired over 30 covers including versions by Natalia Jiménez (2019), Edith Márquez (2016), and Lucero (2006). Pérez Botija has said the song was not autobiographical but drawn from an imagined character he created — stating he "suffered the character's experience" to write authentically.

Meaning of the Song

The song's central image is devastatingly original: a woman left behind in a failed romance compares herself to a stray cat abandoned in the rain. Rather than rage or beg, she accepts her fate with quiet dignity — "don't worry, I don't blame you for the past." The offer to buy coffee and make love "if we ever meet again" is both heartbreakingly casual and deeply intimate. "I'll meow for you" transforms grief into something almost animal — primal, wordless, instinctive. The rain represents both the tears she refuses to shed openly and the cold reality of life without love. It's a farewell song that never actually says goodbye.

Lyrics / Letra

Amor tranquilo no te voy a molestar

Tu te vas y yo me quedo a qui

Ojala y tengas suerte

Ya lo vez la vida es así
Tu y te vas
Y yo me quedo a qui
Lloverá y ya no seré tuya
Seré la gata bajo la lluvia

Ya lo vez la vida es así
Tu te vas y yo me quedo a qui
Lloverá y ya no seré tuya
Seré la gata bajo la lluvia
Y maullare por ti

English Translation

Calm love, I'm not going to bother you
My fate was already cast, I know
And I know there's a torrent spinning through your mind
Love, ours was only a coincidence
The same hour, the same boulevard

Don't worry, there's no problem
I don't blame you for the past
You see, life is like this
You leave and I stay here

It will rain and I'll no longer be yours
I'll be the cat under the rain
And I'll meow for you

Love, I don't know, don't say anything really
If you see a tear, forgive me
I know you didn't mean
To make a wounded cat cry

Love, if someday we see each other around
Buy me a coffee and make love to me
And if I never see you again
I hope you have luck

You see, life is like this
You leave and I stay here
It will rain and I'll no longer be yours
I'll be the cat under the rain
And I'll meow for you
