Eres Tu
It didn't win Eurovision. It didn't need to. Juan Carlos Calderón's quiet declaration peaked at #9 on Billboard and landed in the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame.
About the Song
"Eres Tú" ("It's You") was written by Spanish composer Juan Carlos Calderón and recorded by the Basque vocal group Mocedades, formed in 1967 in Bilbao by the three Uranga siblings and friends. Calderón, who also named the group ("mocedades" means "youths"), selected the song to represent Spain at the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest in Luxembourg, where it placed second with 125 points — just four behind the winner. Despite not winning Eurovision, the song became a massive global hit. In 1974, it peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Mocedades the only Spanish act to score a U.S. top ten hit sung entirely in Spanish. The song was released in six languages — Spanish, English (as "Touch the Wind"), French, German, Italian, and Basque — and sold over one million copies in the U.S. alone. In 2013, "Eres Tú" was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame, and in 2015 Billboard ranked it #47 on its 50 Greatest Latin Songs of All Time. A 50th anniversary version featuring tenor Plácido Domingo was released in 2023. Las Almas brings this Eurovision classic to Latin American audiences with a warm, intimate rendition that honors the song's enduring emotional power.
Meaning of the Song
"Eres Tú" is a love song built entirely from metaphors drawn from the natural world and the comforts of home. The beloved is compared to a promise, a summer morning, a smile, fresh rain, a strong breeze — elemental forces that sustain life itself. The chorus deepens this with domestic imagery: "the water of my fountain, the fire of my home, the fire of my bonfire, the wheat of my bread." These are not luxuries but necessities — the person loved is woven into the fabric of survival. The song's power lies in its simplicity: rather than describing what love feels like, it describes what the beloved is — everything essential. The recurring phrase "así, así, eres tú" ("just so, it's you") suggests a quiet certainty, as though the singer is discovering in real time that every good thing in life leads back to this one person. It's a declaration not of passion but of profound recognition.
Lyrics / Letra
