El Gavilancillo
El Gavilancillo doesn't sneak — he announces himself from the sky. A sparrowhawk, a stolen dove, and a husband dared to give chase. This Huasteco classic is flirtation with wings, and it has never once apologized.
About the Song
"El Gavilancillo" is a traditional son jalisciense — the foundational folk music genre of the Mexican state of Jalisco that gave birth to mariachi music itself. The son jalisciense originated in the town of Cocula, Jalisco, during the 19th century, blending Spanish musical traditions with pre-colonial Mexican and indigenous rhythms. The genre is characterized by its distinctive rhythmic pulse, alternating between 3/4 and 6/8 time signatures (known as sesquialtera), and its aggressive, spirited vocal style. "El Gavilancillo" ("The Little Sparrowhawk") is one of the classic sones from the mariachi repertoire, famously recorded by the legendary Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán during their earliest recording sessions between 1937 and 1947. Founded in 1898 in the town of Tecalitlán in southern Jalisco, Mariachi Vargas is widely regarded as the greatest mariachi ensemble in history, having appeared in nearly 200 films and defined the art form for over a century. The song belongs to the same rich tradition as other beloved sones jaliscienses like "La Negra," "El Son de la Negra," and "Las Abajeñas." In 2011, UNESCO recognized mariachi music as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán carries forward this proud Jalisco tradition with their rendition of this timeless son.
Meaning of the Song
"El Gavilancillo" ("The Little Sparrowhawk") is a playful and swaggering son about a man who compares himself to a sparrowhawk — a small but fierce bird of prey that soars freely across the mountains and horizons. The singer declares himself a charming rogue: he likes both dark-haired and fair-haired women, claims he's not looking for love because he already has his sweethearts, and boasts that he loves them and lets them go just to see if he can keep them. The sparrowhawk metaphor captures the essence of the character — a free spirit who flies where he pleases, beholden to no one, yet who acknowledges that love, once entered into, brings inescapable sorrow: "si me pongo a quererles, ya no salgo de la pena" (if I start to love them, I'll never escape the sorrow). Beneath the bravado lies a tender vulnerability — the recognition that even the freest-flying hawk can be grounded by love. The song embodies the proud, independent spirit of rural Jalisco and the mariachi tradition's celebration of machismo tempered with emotional honesty.

que ando por aquí volando
Yo soy el gavilancillo

Tira-la-la-la, ay, la-la-la

A ver si puedo agarrar
