About the Song

"Dreaming of You" was written by American songwriters Franne Golde and Tom Snow in 1989, originally for the R&B group The Jets, who turned it down. Years later, Golde brought it to Selena Quintanilla (1971–1995), the Queen of Tejano music from Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena recorded the song on March 5, 1995, at Q-Productions in Corpus Christi — one of her last recordings before her murder on March 31. Despite battling bronchitis, producers used her first take. Released posthumously on the album "Dreaming of You" (July 18, 1995), which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 — the first predominantly Spanish-language album to do so — selling 175,000 copies on its first day. The single peaked at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Las Almas performs a Spanish-language adaptation, bringing Selena's crossover dream full circle by returning this English-language classic to Spanish.

Meaning of the Song

The Spanish version transforms an already intimate song into something even more tender. The narrator lies awake while the world sleeps, wishing on a star that her beloved is thinking of her too. The shift from "dreaming" to "I still can't believe you came to me" in the final verse turns longing into fulfillment — a wish answered. In the context of Selena's legacy, the song carries an unbearable poignancy: she recorded it weeks before her death, and the final sustained note on "tonight" became the last word she ever recorded for the album.
