Como la Flor
She wished him well. That's what makes it devastating. Como la Flor is Selena at her most graceful — and most heartbroken.
About the Song
Como la Flor is one of the signature songs of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, the Queen of Tejano music, released in 1992 on her album Entre a Mi Mundo. Tejano music — born on the Texas-Mexico border — blends traditional Mexican ranchera with cumbia, pop, and American country influences. Selena transformed Como la Flor into an anthem of dignified heartbreak, and her 1995 live performance of the song at the Houston Astrodome became legendary. After her tragic death that year, the song became inseparable from her memory. It remains one of the most beloved Spanish-language songs in the American Southwest and beyond.
Meaning of the Song
Como la Flor is heartbreak with its chin held high. Selena doesn't beg, doesn't rage — she simply says goodbye with a grace that somehow makes the grief more devastating. The flower metaphor is perfect: love bloomed, was tended with everything she had, and still withered. And she wishes you well anyway. The ay-ay-ay at the end isn't just pain — it's the sound of a woman who loved with her whole self and is honest enough to admit what that cost her. This song will break you open and leave you grateful for it.

Lyrics / Letra
Yo sé que tienes
Un nuevo amor
Sin embargo, te deseo lo mejor
Si en mí, no encontraste
Felicidad
Tal vez, alguien más te la dará
Como la flor (como la flor)
Con tanto amor (con tanto amor)
Me diste tú
Se marchitó
Me marcho hoy
Yo sé perder; pero
Ah-ah, ay
Cómo me duele
A ah-ah, ay
Cómo me duele
Si vieras cómo duele
Perder tu amor
Con tu adiós te llevas mi corazón
No sé si pueda
Volver a amar
Porque te di todo el amor que pude dar
Como la flor (como la flor)
Con tanto amor (con tanto amor)
Me diste tú
Se marchitó
Me marcho hoy
Yo sé perder; pero
Ah-ah, ay
Cómo me duele
Ah-ah, ay
Cómo me duele
Como la flor (como la flor)
Con tanto amor (con tanto amor)
Me diste tú
Se marchitó
Me marcho hoy
Yo sé perder; pero
Ah-ah, ay
Cómo me duele
Ah-ah, ay
Cómo me duele
Ah-ah, ay
Cómo me duele
Un nuevo amor
Sin embargo, te deseo lo mejor

English Translation
I know you have
A new love
And yet, I wish you the best
If in me, you didn't find
Happiness
Maybe someone else will give it to you
Like the flower (like the flower)
With so much love (with so much love)
You gave to me
It withered
I am leaving today
I know how to lose; but
Ah-ah, ay
How it hurts me
Ah-ah, ay
How it hurts me
If you could see how much it hurts
To lose your love
With your goodbye you take my heart
I don't know if I can
Love again
Because I gave you all the love I could give
A new love
And yet, I wish you the best
If in me, you didn't find
Happiness
Maybe someone else will give it to you
Like the flower (like the flower)
With so much love (with so much love)
You gave to me
It withered
I am leaving today
I know how to lose; but
Ah-ah, ay
How it hurts me
Ah-ah, ay
How it hurts me
If you could see how much it hurts
To lose your love
With your goodbye you take my heart
I don't know if I can
Love again
Because I gave you all the love I could give
