Bésame Mucho
Written by a teenager who had never been kissed, this became the most recorded Spanish-language song of all time. Las Almas delivers Consuelo Velázquez's masterpiece.
About the Song
"Bésame Mucho" was written by Mexican concert pianist and composer Consuelo Velázquez when she was only about 16 years old, before she had ever been kissed. She later said the entire song was "a product of imagination" — she had been raised to believe that kissing was a sin. The melody was inspired by the aria "Quejas, o la Maja y el Ruiseñor" from the 1916 opera Goyescas by Spanish composer Enrique Granados. The song was first recorded in 1941 by Spanish-Mexican baritone Emilio Tuero. It quickly became a massive Big Band hit during World War II, resonating with women waiting for their husbands at the battlefront. In 1944, Bob Eberly and Kitty Kallen with Jimmy Dorsey & His Orchestra took it to No. 1 in the United States. In 1999, "Bésame Mucho" was recognized as the most recorded and covered Spanish-language song of all time, and was declared the "Song of the Century" at a Univision event in Miami. Translated into more than 20 languages, it has been performed by The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Plácido Domingo, Luis Miguel, Andrea Bocelli, Diana Krall, Linda Ronstadt, and countless others. The Beatles recorded it at both their Decca audition and their first EMI session in 1962. According to BMI, the song has had more than two million performances on radio and television. Velázquez, born in 1916 in Jalisco, Mexico, passed away in 2005, but her song remains one of the most beloved and enduring love songs ever written.
Meaning of the Song
"Bésame Mucho" is a song about the anticipation of love rather than the reality of it. The speaker pleads with their beloved to kiss them passionately — "as if tonight were the last time" — driven by a deep fear of loss and separation. The repeated phrase "que tengo miedo a perderte" ("because I'm afraid of losing you") reveals a love shadowed by urgency and impermanence. The singer wants to hold their beloved close, to gaze into their eyes, knowing that by tomorrow they may be far, far away. It is a song of longing, desire, and vulnerability — the ache of wanting to capture a perfect moment before it slips away. The bolero's power lies in its simplicity: a few words — "kiss me, kiss me a lot" — carry the entire weight of human desire, fear, and devotion. During World War II, it became an anthem for lovers separated by conflict, giving the lyrics an added layer of real-world poignancy. At its core, "Bésame Mucho" expresses one of humanity's most universal emotions: the wish to hold on to love in the face of inevitable parting.
Lyrics / Letra
Besame,
Besame mucho
Como si fuera ésta noche
La última vez
Besame, besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después
Besame,
Besame mucho
Como si fuera ésta noche
La última vez
Besame, besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después
Quiero tenerte muy cerca
Mirarme en tus ojos
Verte junto a mi
Piensa que tal vez mañana
Yo ya estaré lejos,
Muy lejos de ti
Besame,
Besame mucho
Como si fuera ésta noche
La última vez
Besame, besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después
Besame, besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después
Besame mucho
Como si fuera ésta noche
La última vez
Besame, besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después
Besame,
Besame mucho
Como si fuera ésta noche
La última vez
Besame, besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después
Quiero tenerte muy cerca
Mirarme en tus ojos
Verte junto a mi
Piensa que tal vez mañana
Yo ya estaré lejos,
Muy lejos de ti
Besame,
Besame mucho
Como si fuera ésta noche
La última vez
Besame, besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después
Besame, besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después
Que tengo miedo a perderte
Perderte después

Kiss me a lot
As if tonight were
The last time
Kiss me, kiss me a lot

I want to hold you very close
To see myself in your eyes

I will already be far,
Very far from you
