Ay Jalisco No Te Rajes
Don't back down, Jalisco. Ay Jalisco No Te Rajes is the state's anthem, the charro's war cry, and Mexican pride at full mariachi volume.
About the Song
"¡Ay, Jalisco, No Te Rajes!" ("Oh Jalisco, Don't Back Down!") is a Mexican ranchera composed by Manuel Esperón with lyrics by Ernesto Cortázar Sr. Written in 1941, it was featured in the Mexican film of the same name starring Jorge Negrete, one of the most celebrated singer-actors of Mexico's Golden Age of Cinema. The film and song were enormous hits, and Negrete's powerful baritone voice made the song an instant classic. The melody caught the attention of Walt Disney himself, who personally asked Esperón to collaborate on the Mexican portions of the 1944 animated film 'The Three Caballeros,' which used the same melody with new English lyrics by Ray Gilbert. Though it has a ranchera spirit, the song follows a polka-like rhythmic pattern. It has been covered by countless artists including Vicente Fernández, Lola Beltrán, Pedro Infante, Antonio Aguilar, Plácido Domingo, and Julio Iglesias. The song has become the unofficial anthem of the state of Jalisco and is regularly performed at festivals, celebrations, and sporting events throughout the region. Texas A&M University-Kingsville even adopted it as their official fight song.
Meaning of the Song
"¡Ay, Jalisco, No Te Rajes!" is a passionate love letter to the Mexican state of Jalisco and its capital, Guadalajara. The title — "Oh Jalisco, Don't Back Down!" — sets the tone of fierce pride. The singer celebrates everything that makes Jalisco special: its beautiful women ("the rarest pearl of all Jalisco"), its mariachi tradition ("I love to hear the mariachis sing with their soul"), its tequila culture, and its reputation for bravery and passionate love. The song envisions a romance between the state of Jalisco and the city of Guadalajara, portraying the region as a paradigm of Mexican identity itself. It captures the spirit of Jalisco as a place where love is real and dangerous, where men are brave, where women are beautiful, and where life is lived with full-throated passion — "abrir todo el pecho" (to open your whole chest). The recurring cry of "¡Qué lindo es Jalisco, palabra de honor!" ("How beautiful is Jalisco, word of honor!") is both a boast and a prayer of gratitude.
Lyrics / Letra
Ay Jalisco, Jalisco, Jalisco
Tú tienes tu novia que es Guadalajara
Muchacha bonita, la perla más rara
De todo Jalisco, es mi Guadalajara
Y me gusta escuchar los mariachis
Cantar con el alma, sus lindas canciones
Oír como suenan esos guitarrones
Y echarme un tequila con los valentones
¡Ay Jalisco, no te rajes!
¡Ay Jalisco, no te rajes!

English Translation
Ay Jalisco, don't back down
it comes from my soul to shout
with mariachis and tequila
and the Saltillo sarape
I am very charro and very jalisciense
don't come telling me to back down
Ay Jalisco, don't back down
and I'm proud to be born
in the very heart of Jalisco
little land of songs
little land of loves
Jalisco is my love
What Jalisco there's no other
little land of God first
for its brave men
for its beautiful women
for its mountains and its cacti
and its true love
it comes from my soul to shout
with mariachis and tequila
and the Saltillo sarape
I am very charro and very jalisciense
don't come telling me to back down
Ay Jalisco, don't back down
and I'm proud to be born
in the very heart of Jalisco
little land of songs
