Ave María

Ave María is one of the most performed sacred compositions in Western music, with the most celebrated setting composed by Franz Schubert in 1825 and another beloved version by Charles Gounod (1859). Las Almas' recording represents the long tradition of mariachi ensembles performing sacred and classical works in the Mexican folk idiom — a practice rooted in the Church's historical use of regional music to connect communities with devotion. The Latin text, taken from the Catholic prayer to the Virgin Mary, has been set to music by hundreds of composers across five centuries.

Ave María in a mariachi arrangement is not a contradiction — it is a completion. The prayer to the Virgin has always belonged to the people, and the mariachi has always been the voice of the people.
